Brazen Attack Near Moscow Rattles Russians

Image
A brazen car bombing in a Moscow suburb that killed the daughter of a prominent backer of President Vladimir V. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has injected new uncertainty into the six-month war and rattled Russia’s elite.  The Russian authorities said on Sunday that they had begun a murder investigation into the killing of Daria Dugina, 29, a hawkish political commentator who was the daughter of the philosopher Aleksandr Dugin, long a leading proponent of an imperialist Russia who has been urging the Kremlin to escalate its assault on Ukraine. Russian state television described the car bombing, which occurred on Saturday evening on a highway and shattered the windows of nearby houses in an affluent Moscow suburb, as a “terrorist act” and said the intended target had been Mr. Dugin. It ended up killing his daughter instead because he had taken a different car at the last minute, according to Russian news reports. On August 21st Warner Bros Discovery launched “ House of the Dragon ”, a spin-off of its racy smash-hit, “Game of Thrones”, made at a reported cost of over $150m. Hot on its heels, on September 1st Amazon Prime Video will release “The Rings of Power”, a more chaste but even pricier drama based on the “Lord of the Rings” books. With a rumoured pricetag of $465m, Amazon’s offering will be the most expensive piece of television ever made. The near-simultaneous releases will make for an epic ratings battle. But they are also part of a longer-running war that pits old Hollywood studios against new streaming upstarts. Warner Bros, one of America’s most venerable film studios, will mark its 100th birthday next year. Amazon, which makes its money from e-commerce and cloud computing, launched its video sideline only five years ago. As the streaming wars intensify, each side believes it has an

Oil dips on demand concerns and possibility of Iran boosting supply

Image
Oil prices fell in early trading on Monday on concerns related to a slowdown in demand in China, the world’s second-largest economy, the possibility of Iranian crude coming back to the market and a US dollar rally. Brent, the global benchmark for two thirds of the world's oil, was trading 1.60 per cent lower at $95.17 a barrel at 11.13am UAE time on Monday. West Texas Intermediate, the gauge that tracks US crude, was down 1.80 per cent at $89.14 a barrel. “Lacklustre Chinese data last week has seen demand concerns continue to outweigh any supply-side issues, despite warnings around upcoming tightness in the market from the new Opec secretary general,” said Emirates NBD’s Mena economist Daniel Richards. In an interview with Bloomberg last week, Opec secretary general Haitham Al Ghais said global oil markets remained at risk of a supply squeeze. China, the top importer of crude, also cut lending rates last week to revive demand as its economy slowed unexpectedly in July, with factor

China's Covid-19 lockdown strands 25,000 tourists in Sanya resort town

Image
China's popular tourist island of Hainan locked down more areas on Monday as it battles its worst Covid-19 outbreak after recording very few cases over the past two years, compared with many other regions in the country. About 25,000 tourists were stranded in Sanya, the hardest-hit city in Hainan's outbreak and the island's key tourist centre, as of Sunday. The island in the South China Sea, which recorded just two local symptomatic Covid cases last year, has reported more than 1,400 domestically transmitted infections this month, including 982 symptomatic ones. Although that is small by global standards, it is the province's biggest outbreak since the virus was first reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019. The sharp increase in cases comes amid increased interest in tourism after China slightly eased curbs aimed at domestic travel, accounting for the shorter incubation period of the Omicron variant, which requires a shorter quarantine time. Ukraine: four more ships carrying 170,000 tonnes of grain depart under UN deal

Image
Four more ships carrying about 170,000 tonnes of maize and other foodstuffs sailed from Ukrainian Black Sea ports on Sunday under a deal to unblock the country's exports after Russia's invasion. The UN and Turkey brokered the agreement last month after warnings that the halt in grain shipments caused by Russia's invasion of Turkey could lead to severe food shortages and even outbreaks of famine in parts of the world. Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said there were plans to step up shipments. “We are gradually moving on to larger volumes of work. We plan to ensure the ability of the ports to handle at least 100 vessels per month in the near future,” he said. Ukraine is also expected to soon start exporting grain from its Black Sea port of Pivdennyi, an expansion that would allow it to send out at least three million tonnes of goods a month, Mr Kubrakov said on Facebook. Before Moscow began what it calls its “special military operation”, Russia and Ukrain

India needs to do more for tigers despite conservation success, expert says

Image
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed India ’s efforts in conserving tigers, but experts say the country needs to look beyond numbers and focus on increasing protected areas and preventing conflict with humans. “I laud all those who are actively working to protect the tiger. It would make you proud that India has 52 tiger reserves covering over 75,000 square kilometres. Innovative measures are being undertaken to involve local communities in tiger protection,” Mr Modi said, on the occasion of International Tiger Day. The tiger, India's national animal, is a protected species in the country. India has 2,967 tigers in the wild, according to a 2019 census, or two-thirds of the worldwide population. The number of tiger reserves has grown to 52 since the protected areas were set up in 1973 under Project Tiger, which aims to increase the population in the wild to 4,000 by the next decade. Taiwan accuses Beijing of simulating invasion as US-China relations nosedive

Image
Taiwan accused the Chinese army of simulating an attack on its main island Saturday, as Beijing continued its retaliation for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Taipei visit. Relations between the two superpowers nosedived following Pelosi’s trip to China’s self-ruled neighbor — which it claims as its territory — prompting calls from the UN for an urgent de-escalation of tensions. Beijing maintained some of its largest-ever military drills around Taiwan on Saturday — exercises aimed at practicing a blockade and ultimate invasion of the island, analysts say.
